Reynisfjara vs Diamond Beach: what's the difference?
Two of Iceland's most photographed black beaches, often confused, actually hours apart and completely different experiences.
The short answer
Reynisfjara is the dramatic black sand beach near Vik, with basalt columns, a sea cave and offshore sea stacks, about 180 km from Reykjavik. Diamond Beach sits much further east beside the Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon, where chunks of glacier ice wash up and glitter on the black sand. They are different experiences several hours apart by road, so a standard South Coast day trip reaches Reynisfjara but not Diamond Beach, which usually needs a longer tour or a multi-day trip. Choose Reynisfjara for columns and drama, Diamond Beach for ice on the sand.
If ice on the shore is the reason for your trip, check the dedicated Diamond Beach departure before arranging the long day east. Check your Diamond Beach departure
Access update, September 25, 2026: SafeTravel reports viewpoint-only access at Reynisfjara during current stormy weather and high waves. Follow local closures; a booking does not grant sand or sea-cave access.
They both show up when you search "Iceland black sand beach", and travellers mix them up constantly. Reynisfjara and Diamond Beach are both black, both stunning, and both worth seeing. They are also nothing alike, and they sit far enough apart that no ordinary day trip catches both. Sorting them out before you book saves a lot of disappointment at the coach door.

Reynisfjara: columns, stacks and surf
Reynisfjara is the black beach near Vik, about 180 km and 2.5 hours east of Reykjavik. Its signature is geology: the Gardar basalt columns rising in a hexagonal stair, the Halsanefshellir sea cave, and the Reynisdrangar sea stacks standing offshore in a violent sea. This is the beach from Star Wars: Rogue One and Game of Thrones, and it is famous just as much for its danger, the sneaker waves here have killed visitors. It is the standard, reachable South Coast highlight, included on the usual day trips from the city.
Diamond Beach: ice on the black sand
Diamond Beach is a different animal, much further east on Route 1, beside the Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon. Here, chunks of ice break off the glacier, drift through the lagoon and wash up on a black beach, where they sit and glitter like scattered diamonds against the dark sand. There are no basalt columns and no sea stacks; the whole draw is the ice. Because it is so far from Reykjavik, well beyond Vik and Reynisfjara, it does not fit on a standard South Coast day and normally calls for a longer single-day tour or a two-day trip.

Which one, and how to see it
If you want a standard ten-hour day out of Reykjavik, Reynisfjara is the nearer choice. A dedicated Diamond Beach tour is also possible in one day, but the verified route takes about fourteen hours. Reynisfjara sits at a nearer day-trip distance and pairs naturally with the waterfalls, glacier viewpoint and Vik on the same route. Diamond Beach is the pick if you have more time and want the glacier-lagoon ice, but plan for a much longer day or an overnight, since driving to Jokulsarlon and back from the city in winter daylight is a stretch.
For the Reynisfjara option, the easiest way to see it is a guided South Coast day trip from Reykjavik that drives the route and stops at the beach, so you skip the long round trip behind the wheel. If Diamond Beach is your goal instead, look specifically for a Jokulsarlon tour or a multi-day South Coast itinerary, and do not expect a standard South Coast day to reach it.
Common questions
Are Reynisfjara and Diamond Beach the same place?
No. Reynisfjara is a black sand beach near Vik with basalt columns and sea stacks, about 180 km from Reykjavik. Diamond Beach is much further east by the Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon, known for glacier ice on the sand. Allow several hours between them by road, depending on conditions.
Can you visit both in one day from Reykjavik?
It is a very long day. Diamond Beach is far beyond Reynisfjara, so reaching both from the city means an early start and many hours of driving. Most standard South Coast day trips stop at Reynisfjara only; Diamond Beach usually needs a dedicated longer or multi-day tour.
Which is better, Reynisfjara or Diamond Beach?
They offer different things. Reynisfjara wins for basalt columns, sea stacks and coastal drama at an easy day-trip distance. Diamond Beach wins for glacier ice glittering on black sand, but it is much further and needs more time. Pick by what you most want to see.
Does the South Coast day trip go to Diamond Beach?
Usually not. A standard South Coast day trip from Reykjavik reaches Reynisfjara and turns around. Diamond Beach lies much further east and requires a longer single-day Jokulsarlon tour or a two-day itinerary.
