Where to stay near Reynisfjara and Vik
The lodging question that shapes your whole South Coast plan: sleep near the black beach, or drive out from the city each day?

The short answer
You have two real options. Stay in or near Vik i Myrdal, a few minutes from Reynisfjara, for early and late access to the beaches and a shot at the northern lights, though rooms are limited and book up fast. Or base yourself in Reykjavik and reach Reynisfjara on a day trip, about 180 km and 2.5 hours each way, which is cheaper and simpler but means seeing the beach in the busy middle of the day. For most first-time visitors, day-tripping from Reykjavik is the easier choice.
Where you sleep decides how you see Reynisfjara. Base near the beach and you get it at dawn with nobody around. Stay in the city and you trade that quiet for lower costs and far more choice of restaurants and rooms. Neither is wrong. The right answer depends on how many days you have and what you came for.
Vik as a base
Vik i Myrdal is the closest cluster of accommodation to Reynisfjara, only a few minutes' drive away. Staying here means you can walk the black beaches early or late, when the tour coaches have not arrived or have already left, and in winter you have a genuine chance at the northern lights from a dark rural spot. The catch is scale. Vik is a small village, so the number of guesthouses and hotel rooms is limited, they book out well ahead in summer, and prices climb in peak season. There are a few more scattered farm stays and guesthouses along the road between Hvolsvollur and Vik if the village itself is full.
Reykjavik as a base
The alternative is to keep your bed in Reykjavik and treat Reynisfjara as a day out. The city has by far the most rooms, food and nightlife, and it is the hub every South Coast tour leaves from. The trade-off is the drive: Reynisfjara sits about 180 km away, roughly 2.5 hours each way, so a day trip is long and you reach the beach in the middle of the day when it is busiest. For a lot of visitors that is a perfectly good deal, especially on a first trip where the city is the base for everything else too.

Which should you choose?
If you have three or more days on the South Coast, or you are a photographer chasing quiet light and the aurora, stay a night in or near Vik and enjoy Reynisfjara without the crowd. If you have a tight trip built around Reykjavik, or you just want to see the beach once without arranging rural lodging, day-tripping from the city is the simpler and cheaper path.

Book Vik early. In summer the handful of rooms goes months ahead, and last-minute searches often push you 30 to 60 minutes back up the road.
