You have two real options. Stay in or near Vik i Myrdal, a few minutes from Reynisfjara, for flexible timing at permitted viewpoints and a chance of northern lights in dark conditions, with a smaller choice of rooms. Or base yourself in Reykjavik and reach Reynisfjara on a day trip, about 180 km and 2.5 hours each way, which simplifies lodging but makes a long sightseeing day; compare your actual room and transport costs. For most first-time visitors, day-tripping from Reykjavik is the easier choice.

Where you sleep decides how you see Reynisfjara. Base near the beach and you can plan permitted viewpoints around the light, subject to access restrictions. Stay in the city and you have far more choice of restaurants and rooms, with total cost depending on your dates and transport. Neither is wrong. Vik as a base
Vik i Myrdal is the closest cluster of accommodation to Reynisfjara, only a few minutes' drive away. Staying here gives you flexibility to visit permitted viewpoints outside coach schedules. In winter, northern lights are possible with darkness, clear sky and aurora activity; an overnight stay does not guarantee a sighting or beach access. The catch is scale. Vik is a small village with a limited number of guesthouses and hotel rooms; compare availability and rates for your dates before arranging the rest of your trip. There are a few more scattered farm stays and guesthouses along the road between Hvolsvollur and Vik if the village itself is full.
The main places to stay in Vik
Vik has a small, well-defined set of places to sleep, with fewer choices than Reykjavík. These are the best-known options in and right around the village, closest to Reynisfjara. Reykjavik as a base
The alternative is to keep your bed in Reykjavik and treat Reynisfjara as a day out. The city has by far the most rooms, food and nightlife, and it is the departure hub for the selected South Coast day trip. The trade-off is the drive: Reynisfjara sits about 180 km away, roughly 2.5 hours each way, so a day trip is long and your sightseeing follows the operator’s schedule. For a lot of visitors that is a perfectly good deal, especially on a first trip where the city is the base for everything else too.

Which should you choose?
If you have three or more days on the South Coast, or you are a photographer chasing quiet light and the aurora, consider a night in or near Vik for flexible timing at permitted viewpoints. If you have a tight trip built around Reykjavik, or you just want to see the beach once without arranging rural lodging, day-tripping from the city is a simpler lodging plan; compare actual total costs.
